If you are interested in visiting historic sites in Norway, we here present a selection. This is
both ancient places, where the foundations of Norway was created, medievel sites like
Håkonshallen in Bergen, Norway’s first lighthouse from 1655 and newer sites like Vemork,
known both for its industrial heritage and its World War 2 legacy with the heavy water
sabotage operation against the Germans. We also include quite new sites, like
Lysgårdsbakkene from the 1994 Olympics in Lillehammer

HÅKONSHALLEN
Historic sites
Bryggen is the most famous and
popular attraction in Bergen ant
the third most visited tourist
attraction in Norway. Almost two
million visitors each year explore
this old wooden house quarter
which has been on the Unesco
World Heritage List since 1979.
Håkonshallen is together with the
Rosenkranz Tower part of
Bergenhus Fortress, located next to
Bryggen in Bergen.
The venue where the Lillehammer
1994 Olympic Opening and Closing
ceremony took place, and where
the Olympic ski jump competitions
were held. Today it is one of the hills
used in the ski jump world cup.
If you explore the cliffs by Lindesnes
Lighthouse, there are a lot of
trenches, bunkers, canon batteries
and tunnels in the area. These are
the remains of the German
occupation of the lighthouse area
during World War 2
In Hafrsfjord, right outside
Stavanger, you will find one of
Norway´s most famous landmarks,
the monument «Sverd i stein» - or
«Swords in Rock» in English.
Vemork Power Plant was when it
opened in 1911 the world´s largest
power plant, but it also played a
main role in the most famous
sabotage operation in Norway
during World War 2
